Sonora, Mexico Travel Warnings and Advisories

The United States Department of State routinely updates its Mexico Travel Warnings, which include advisories, warnings and other information regarding travel to the Mexican state of Sonora and other parts of Mexico.

The information is presented as guidance and direction to U.S. federal government employees, such as where they can travel, and when, but is also meant as guidance for Americans traveling abroad.

In January 2018 the State Department developed a risk / danger rating system from “1” being the safest to “4” being the most dangerous (think Syria or Somalia). The state of Sonora, Mexico received a rating of “3,” or “Reconsider Travel.” The rating was given due to crime levels in the state, although the majority of crime happens in areas where tourists should not travel, and at times when they should not be traveling.

Still, there was a rolling battle with automatic weapons fire between Nogales, Mexico police and a caravan of late-model pickup trucks on Nogales streets during daytime hours in late February 2018, and a Phoenix woman was shot in the Rocky Point bar district on the early morning hours of Easter Sunday 2018.

We believe that Sonora is a very safe place for tourists, when using the proper precautions such as traveling in groups, during the day, and only in areas where tourists are meant to be visiting.

If you have questions about the current safety situation in Nogales and the state of Sonora, the U.S. Consulate in Nogales, Sonora is located at Calle San Jose, Nogales, Sonora, telephone +52-631-311-8150. Click here to see their website.
